Title: Scientist – Population Health Intervention Research

Position Details:
Reporting to the Director of Health Promotion, Chronic Disease and Injury
Prevention, the Scientist is responsible for leading on the design and
implementation of solution-focused population health intervention research (PHIR),
which involves “the use of scientific methods to produce knowledge about policy
and program interventions that operate within or outside of the health sector and
have the potential to impact health at the population level.

Key Responsibilities include:
Collaborate and provide scientific leadership to ensure intellectual rigor and
scientific relevance in PHIR-related initiatives undertaken by HPCDIP, including:
Serve as Investigator or Co-Investigator in collaborative intervention research
projects including conceptualization, research design, data collection, analysis,
interpretation and dissemination.
Engage closely with PHO and public health partners in policy and practice in the
development of well-designed population and public health interventions.
Develop research grant applications and provide scientific oversight for funded
projects.
Contribute scientific and methodological expertise to HPCDIP projects.
Collaborate on the development of HPCDIP’s research agenda consistent with
PHO’s overall strategic research priorities.
Work with the Director, Senior Scientist, and other members of the research team
to develop, implement, and evaluate the research agenda for HPCDIP.
Support a program for post-doctoral and graduate students in collaboration with
the Senior Scientist, public health schools and relevant degree programs,
including student mentoring.
Provide scientific liaison functions related to relevant internal and external
committees.
Participate in the HPCDPIP strategic and operational planning cycles, including
support for the identification of emerging PHIR priorities and opportunities;
Providing scientific and technical advice on the creation of evidence-informed
reports.
Other duties as assigned which may include:
Manage research-related contracts and collaborative relationships with research
organizations and government ministries.
Knowledge and Skills include:
High level of competence in scientific enquiry including demonstrated experience
in study design, data management and extraction, quantitative and qualitative
data analyses, policy analysis, and economic evaluation.
Strong understanding and ability to conceptualize and understand intervention
processes, outcomes and impacts at multiple levels.
Experience in applied research in health and social policy.
Experience working collaboratively with government, research organizations,
local public health units, community organizations and coalitions.
Excellent written and oral communication skills including with practitioners and
policy-makers as well as peers as evidenced by publication in peer-reviewed
journals, reports, and presentations.
Demonstrated success in securing research funding through competitive grants
processes (Tri Council research grants and other government program sources).
Knowledge and experience in developing applications for ethical approval
pertaining to the conduct of PHIR.
Experience in providing scientific feedback and mentoring of professional staff
and/or students.
Education and Experience include:
Completed doctoral degree in a relevant discipline. Preference will be given to
candidates who demonstrate cross-disciplinary experience as well as experience
with the application of scientific methods to assess the impact of programs or
policies on population health.
PHIR-related research experience in healthy eating, physical activity and/or
obesity prevention within a life course approach prioritizing children and youth an
asset.
Minimum of two to three years of post-PhD. experience in research and
evaluation pertaining to population health.
Eligible for (or currently holding) an academic appointment (i.e. assistant
professor status) at an Ontario University within a relevant academic public
health discipline.
