    The Canadian Arthritis Network (CAN) is the gateway to arthritis research and development in Canada. Whether developing an idea or assessing new therapies in the community, CAN provides access to expertise each step of the way. We are one of the 15 federal Networks in the Networks of Centres of Excellence, Canada’s flagship science and technology program.

    At this time we are looking for a 1.5 year full-time contract Knowledge Broker to assist the Network in achieving the aim of synthesizing and disseminating arthritis research knowledge and expertise to government, not-for-profit and public receptors. This person will work from an office located in Toronto and play a crucial role in the future of the Network.

    The Knowledge Broker actively supports CAN’s mandates by leading a wide variety of projects related to the synthesis and dissemination of research knowledge and expertise to receptors. The Knowledge Broker will:

    Identify and engage researchers and key members of the receptor communities.
    Foster effective relationships and interactions between knowledge creators and users.
    Gather and evaluate research knowledge and evidence for synthesis.
    Package knowledge into usable messages for government, clinical, not-for-profit and public consumption.
    Disseminate, using marketing and communication tools, messages for uptake by knowledge receptors.

    The successful applicant will have a post-secondary degree in a field relevant to arthritis research and at least two years experience as a Knowledge Broker. Experience working in research communications or knowledge translation and exchange would be valuable assets. The applicant must have exceptional interpersonal, communication and team building skills, and be goal driven and results oriented. Excellent organisational skills will allow the applicant to confidently prioritize, interact cross-functionally and respond to the many challenges of this position. Excellent computer, (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Internet) skills will complement the applicant’s ability to multi-task. Bilingual (French and English) language skills are an asset.

    and control; surveillance and epidemiology; health promotion, chronic disease and

    preparedness; and public health laboratory services to support health providers, the
    public health system and partner ministries in making informed decisions and taking
    informed action to improve the health and security of Ontarians.

    Position Details:

    Reporting to the Director of Health Promotion, Chronic Disease and Injury
    Prevention, the Scientist is responsible for leading on the design and
    implementation of solution-focused population health intervention research (PHIR),
    which involves “the use of scientific methods to produce knowledge about policy
    and program interventions that operate within or outside of the health sector and
    have the potential to impact health at the population level.

    Key Responsibilities include:

    Collaborate and provide scientific leadership to ensure intellectual rigor and
    scientific relevance in PHIR-related initiatives undertaken by HPCDIP, including:

     Serve as Investigator or Co-Investigator in collaborative intervention research
    projects including conceptualization, research design, data collection, analysis,
    interpretation and dissemination.

     Engage closely with PHO and public health partners in policy and practice in the
    development of well-designed population and public health interventions.

     Develop research grant applications and provide scientific oversight for funded
    projects.

     Contribute scientific and methodological expertise to HPCDIP projects.

     Collaborate on the development of HPCDIP’s research agenda consistent with
    PHO’s overall strategic research priorities.

     Work with the Director, Senior Scientist, and other members of the research team
    to develop, implement, and evaluate the research agenda for HPCDIP.

     Support a program for post-doctoral and graduate students in collaboration with
    the Senior Scientist, public health schools and relevant degree programs,
    including student mentoring.

     Provide scientific liaison functions related to relevant internal and external
    committees.

     Participate in the HPCDPIP strategic and operational planning cycles, including
    support for the identification of emerging PHIR priorities and opportunities;

     Providing scientific and technical advice on the creation of evidence-informed
    reports.

    Other duties as assigned which may include:
     Manage research-related contracts and collaborative relationships with research
    organizations and government ministries.

    Knowledge and Skills include:

     High level of competence in scientific enquiry including demonstrated experience
    in study design, data management and extraction, quantitative and qualitative
    data analyses, policy analysis, and economic evaluation.

     Strong understanding and ability to conceptualize and understand intervention
    processes, outcomes and impacts at multiple levels.

     Experience in applied research in health and social policy.

     Experience working collaboratively with government, research organizations,
    local public health units, community organizations and coalitions.

     Excellent written and oral communication skills including with practitioners and
    policy-makers as well as peers as evidenced by publication in peer-reviewed
    journals, reports, and presentations.

     Demonstrated success in securing research funding through competitive grants
    processes (Tri Council research grants and other government program sources).

     Knowledge and experience in developing applications for ethical approval
    pertaining to the conduct of PHIR.

     Experience in providing scientific feedback and mentoring of professional staff
    and/or students.

    Education and Experience include:

     Completed doctoral degree in a relevant discipline. Preference will be given to
    candidates who demonstrate cross-disciplinary experience as well as experience
    with the application of scientific methods to assess the impact of programs or
    policies on population health.

     PHIR-related research experience in healthy eating, physical activity and/or
    obesity prevention within a life course approach prioritizing children and youth an
    asset.

     Minimum of two to three years of post-PhD. experience in research and
    evaluation pertaining to population health.

     Eligible for (or currently holding) an academic appointment (i.e. assistant
    professor status) at an Ontario University within a relevant academic public
    health discipline.

    JOB SUMMARY
    This Programmatic Grant, titled Equity-Oriented Primary Health Care Interventions for Marginalized Populations: Addressing Structural Inequities and Structural Violence, includes three inter-related studies conducted in two provinces: BC and Ontario.

    This research program brings together an interdisciplinary team of researchers and knowledge users from nursing, medicine, population and public health, community health sciences, and information and media studies, and leaders in Aboriginal health, women’s health, and the PHC sector. Key partnerships are with the Public Health Agency of Canada; the Aboriginal Health Program of the BC Provincial Health Services Authority; Aboriginal health organizations; Echo: Improving Women’s Health in Ontario; and a variety Primary Health Care clinics in BC and Ontario.

    The overarching goal is to contribute new knowledge about innovative Primary Health Care interventions to mitigate the effects of structural inequities and structural violence for marginalized populations, and the policy environments needed to support such programming.

    The Research Manager will be based in our Research Unit (Critical Research in Health and Healthcare Inequities (http://www.nursing.ubc.ca/CRiHHI/) at the UBC School of Nursing in Vancouver, BC. The Research Manager will be responsible for the overall management and coordination of this program of research, and will travel regularly to Prince George and Victoria BC, and occasionally to London Ontario and Ottawa.

    ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS
    The Research Manager will report directly to Principal Investigator and the Co-Principal Investigators. Research staff and research assistants will report directly to the Research Manager. The Research Manager will also be responsible for communication with team members based in cities across Canada, and with research collaborators in New Zealand, Australia and the UK.

    WORK PERFORMED
    Research Management:
    o Work with Principal Investigator and Co-Principal Investigators to set priorities and goals for the research program
    o Work closely and communicate regularly with the research team members who are based at various universities, healthcare agencies, and government departments
    o Exercise professional judgment and initiative in the overall coordination and management of the three inter-related research projects
    o Plan and organize research team meetings at multiple sites, and maintain minutes and records of decisions
    o Ensure that all aspects of the research program are running according to schedule, and that the research objectives are met
    o Coordinate research activities conducted at multiple sites concurrently
    o Provide regular updates on research activities that are occurring concurrently at multiple sites
    o Monitor research ethics procedures o Responsible for management at the UBC research office, including the set up and maintenance of files, data tracking and storage procedures, etc.
    o Prepare budgets and forecasting requirements o Monitor research budgets and implement cost-effective measures to optimize budget utilization

    Data Management, Data Analysis, and Supervision of Research Staff:
    o Oversee the development of Primary Health Care Indicators for measuring performance quality in Primary Health Care, in collaboration with the research team
    o Oversee the management, coding and analysis of quantitative data in multiple sites, in consultation with the principal investigators and designated co-investigators
    o Oversee the management, coding and analysis of qualitative data collected at multiple sites.
    o Set up systems to manage and track quantitative and qualitative datasets collected at multiple sites.
    o Coordinate the hiring of research staff, research assistants and trainees
    o Provide supervision and leadership to research staff and research assistants
    o Lead the training of research staff and research assistants in quantitative and qualitative data collection
    o Audit and monitor data collection to ensure the quality of data collected at multiple sites
    o Accountable for the work completed by research staff, research assistants and other staff.

    Knowledge Translation and Exchange (KTE):
    o Develop written reviews of literature needed to support specific projects;
    o Work collaboratively with the research team to develop various reports, academic papers, policy papers, press releases, and presentations
    o Collaborate with our knowledge users and partners in planning, organizing and implement KTE activities
    o Perform other related duties as required.

    CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR
    The quality and productivity of the research program, the research team’s national and international partnerships and communication, and the performance of research staff and research assistants will be affected.

    QUALIFICATIONS
    Post-graduate degree or equivalent professional designation if responsible for a research project Undergraduate degree if not responsible for a research project. 4 years or equivalent combination of education and experience if responsible for research project 6 years or equivalent combination of education and experience if not research work. Master’s or PhD degree in the health or social sciences, preferred. Post-graduate education/training and experience in quantitative research methods, multivariate statistical analysis, and qualitative research methods. Knowledge of Performance Monitoring Indicators (also known as Performance Accountability Indicators) used in healthcare (or other related sectors) preferred. Experience managing multi-site quantitative and qualitative studies. Experience working with healthcare organizations or agencies. Experience providing supervision and leadership to research staff and research assistants. A minimum of two years of administrative experience, skills and knowledge in research management which includes managing large research budgets.     Now recruiting a Knowledge Translation Officer for a new Networks of Centres of Excellence of Canada in Brain Development. The position will be located in either Saskatoon or Vancouver.

    This staff member will direct knowledge transfer and exchange activities, developing plain language documents (in print and online) to disseminate knowledge and findings from NeuroDevNet, and initiating connections with external stakeholders, in person, in print, and online using the NeuroDevNet website and other social media. S/he will assist with planning and implementing the annual conference, quarterly brainstorming sessions, and other communication items as required.

    Together with the Communications Officer, the position will be involved in the planning, development and the dissemination of internal and external communications items, including the website.

    S/he will also build and support collaborations, both between internal members of NeuroDevNet who are widely dispersed, so as to create a learning community, and with external stakeholder partners, building longer-term and mutually beneficially relationships, with both commercial and not-for-profit sectors.

    Other activities will include developing and offering KT methods training opportunities for NeuroDevNet scientists and trainees, coordinating workshops with science communicators, and communications internships organized through several media outlets and academic journals. S/he will also coordinate training opportunities through our partnership with Knowledge Translation Canada’s STIHR training program. Frequent travel in Canada will be required.

    The KTE Officer will require masters-level training and specialized expertise in KTE, community building, networking, communications and media relations. The incumbent will have considerable experience working in a university research setting, with large, interdisciplinary teams, and managing complex projects. Experience in neuroscience or basic health sciences will be considered an asset.
