The next session of the online introduction to systematic review and meta-analysis course will begin September 10, 2012. Please see the attached flyer for further details.

This is an introductory course on systematic reviews and meta-analyses and will be delivered online. It is co-taught by Sharon Straus (MD, MSc) and Andrea Tricco (MSc, PhD). The overall course objective is to teach about systematic reviews in general, as well as how to go about doing a systematic review.

It is recommended that the students conduct a systematic review while taking this course, as the information provided with help guide the systematic review process.

The course will cover 16 modules in total. Each module consists of a video presentation, 3-5 mandatory readings, optional readings, and a mandatory quiz. In addition, there are two assignments related to developing a systematic review question and protocol. The students will have three months to complete the course and we will provide high-level methodological support for the review, including a consultation with an experienced librarian and a consultation with an experienced biostatistician (if meta-analysis is being considered).

Registration deadline for September session: August 31 2012
Course fee: $1600

KT Basics Course - July 5-6 2012, Toronto

Posted
Cross-posted from: news/kt-basics-july-2012

Health care systems worldwide are faced with the challenge of improving the quality of care and decreasing the risk of adverse events. The finding that providing evidence from clinical research is necessary but not sufficient for the provision of optimal care has created interest in knowledge translation (KT), the scientific study of methods for closing the knowledge-to-practice gap and of the barriers and facilitators inherent in this process. Policy makers, funding agencies, clinicians, and researchers have recognized the need for facilitating the implementation of knowledge into practice. Where evidence is implemented both improvements in cost and outcomes are seen. For example US research into treating and preventing AIDS has cost $30 billion. Without this research more than 50% of hospital beds would be filled with AIDS patients at a cost of $1.4 trillion—for every $1 spent in research on AIDS, $50 are saved in treatment costs. In addition, without the application of research into cardiovascular disease done from 1982 until present, costs to treat these patients would be 35% higher. Improving and speeding KT reaps benefits for all participants in the healthcare world.

While there has been an exponential growth in the interest in knowledge translation, to date there is limited capacity in the field. This course will serve as a “primer” on knowledge translation for those interested in the field in order to enhance capacity and to facilitate implementation of KT initiatives. It is aimed at people who want to learn the basics of ‘doing KT’.

This two day course will focus on specific objectives and will include a mixture of didactic and interactive learning and lead to the completion of a project proposal. The course will use the Knowledge to Action Cycle as a framework: http://www.cihr-irsc.gc.ca/e/39033.html.

How will I benefit from this course?

This course will provide you with the understanding and tools to increase the impact of your knowledge translation (KT) activities.

The purpose of this course is to:

  • Learn the basics of putting knowledge into action
  • Apply the basics of knowledge translation to a project relevant to your own setting
  • Build capacity in the practice of knowledge translation

Skills support (methodology, evaluation, needs assessments etc) will be available to participants as they complete their project plans. Facilitators include Sharon Straus, Director of the KT Program, and Onil Bhattacharyya, Clinical Scientist, of the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, St Michael’s Hospital.

Course Details

Course Date: July 5-6, 2012, (Begins 8:30 am July 5 and ends 4:00 pm July 6)

Course Location: Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, Rm 240-241, St Michael’s Hospital, Toronto, ON

Course fee: $600/person

Application deadline: June 15, 2012

Who can apply?

  • This short-course is open to researchers in any of the CIHR pillars.
  • Participants should register as a partnered team (i.e. bring a buddy). The team should consist of decision makers and/or anticipated end-users of the knowledge from relevant clinical departments or other stakeholder/partnership group.

How do I apply?

  1. Please submit your name and the name(s) of your partner/collaborator/co-investigator
  2. Briefly describe the identified health care challenge with an explanation of the relevance including a description of the disease burden for example. This should not be more than 1 paragraph in length.
  3. Briefly describe the type of knowledge that will be translated including whether there is good evidence comprising this knowledge (e.g. there is good evidence from trials showing that delirium prevention strategies are effective on inpatient medicine units)

KT Canada Summer Institute 2012

Posted

We are pleased to announce the Knowledge Translation (KT) Canada Summer Institute to be held in Ottawa from June 4-6, 2012. The purpose of this Summer Institute is to provide participants with the opportunity to increase their understanding of knowledge translation research as well as opportunities and challenges in this field. The Summer Institute will provide participants with the chance to network with colleagues including national and international KT experts.

The theme of the 2012 Institute is "Developing KT Leaders/Practitioners of Tomorrow".

The Summer Institute (SI) is aimed at graduate students, post-doctoral and clinical fellows, and junior faculty who study issues relevant to KT and those who want to learn more about how to advance their research skills in this area. We encourage applications from trainees working in a wide range of disciplines that span all of CIHR's research themes (biomedical, clinical, health services, and population health).

Attendees will have the opportunity to share their research projects (proposals and/or projects with preliminary results) through poster sessions that will facilitate further networking opportunities. Participation in the poster session also allows attendees to be eligible to apply for funding from their home institutions (where this funding is available) to attend the summer institute.

New This year, the SI is open to Junior Faculty. We welcome new faculty and senior faculty new to KT to apply. The cost for faculty to attend is $1000 (covers registration, accommodation for 3 nights, course materials and food associated with the SI)

STIHR Fellowship

Posted

We are pleased to announce funding opportunities for graduate students and post-doctoral fellows in the field of Knowledge Translation (KT). With hospitals and community agencies, we have developed a multidisciplinary, collaborative Clinical Research Initiative (KT Canada) involving colleagues from 8 universities (Calgary, Alberta, Western, Ottawa, McMaster, Toronto, Laval, Prince Edward Island) across Canada to identify and study solutions to ensure that Canadians have tools and skills necessary for KT. In June 2009, KT Canada was awarded a Strategic Training in Health Research (STIHR) grant to create an internationally-recognised national training initiative to enhance capacity in KT and KT research.

As part of the KT Canada training program, trainees will participate in a monthly e-seminar series, research methodology e-seminars, an annual summer institute, and modular distance learning e-courses. Trainees will also secure a mentor from the KT Canada network, develop and revise an annual learning and objectives profile.
